Der Thailänder Atthasit Mahitthi hat die Amateurweltmeisterschaften gewonnen und sich damit sein Ticket für die MT gesichert. Bei den Damen hat - oh Wunder - Reanne Evans gesiegt. THAI TRIUMPH
Atthasit Mahitthi beat Passakorn Suwannawat 11-7 in the all-Thai final of the IBSF World Amateur Championship at the Sima Thani Hotel in Korat on Sunday.
Mahitthi, who received the trophy from the deputy prime minister Suwat Liptapanlop, becomes the fifth Thai player to win snooker's most prestigious amateur tournament, following in the footsteps of James Wattana (1988), Noppadon Noppachorn (1991), Chuchart Trairattanapradit (1993) and Sakchai Sim-ngam (1995).
The 29-year-old from Saraburi is now set to be nominated for a place on the 2008/09 professional Tour. Mahitthi has previously played on the Tour, reaching the last 48 of the 2002 LG Cup and holding a best world ranking of 86 in 2004/05.
He opened the final with a break of 113, but could not pull away from Suwannawat, who played on the Tour last season after winning the 2006 Asian Under-21 Championship.
They were tied at 5-5 going into the final session then Mahitthi, who lost to Kurt Maflin in the semi-finals of this event last year, stormed ahead by winning five consecutive frames. Suwannawat rallied by winning the next two before his opponent clinched victory in frame 18.
"I have not been playing very well of late and entered the tournament will only modest hopes," said Mahitthi. "My target was to match last year's achievement by reaching the semi-finals.
"Once I had got there, victory over Bjorn Haneveer gave me a lot of confidence. I didn't play very well in the first session of the final on Saturday evening as I was very tired after that eight-hour semi-final battle against Bjorn in the morning. I just concentrated on staying close to Passakorn and succeeded.
"It was different in the final session. I was fresh and ready for the job. I had a game plan and it worked well. I restricted Passakorn from scoring and was able to knock balls home when I needed to. This is something that will always be a major feat for not only me but also for Thailand."
Suwannawat said: "It is sad to lose after coming this far. I had worked very hard before the championship and I had done well throughout the tournament.
"I had high hopes of winning the final, but there was nothing I could do to stop Atthasit this afternoon. He was a different player today. I hope that one day I will get another chance and make amends for the loss here."
Top break of the tournament was 140 from Malta's Alex Borg.
In the Masters (over-40) category, former world No 8 Darren Morgan beat Karnchai Wongjan of Thailand 5-1 in the final.
The ladies crown went to Reanne Evans of Dudley in the West Midlands, who beat Belgium's Wendy Jans 5-0.Quelle: worldsnooker.com

Hong Kong's Marco Fu has been awarded the wild card for January's SAGA Insurance Masters, and will face snooker legend Steve Davis at Wembley Arena.
Fu joins an elite field comprising the top 16 players in the world plus qualifier Barry Hawkins for snooker’ most prestigious invitation event, which runs from January 13-20, 2008.
In October, 29-year-old Fu won the first ranking title of his career by beating Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final of the Royal London Watches Grand Prix in Aberdeen. He has risen to 17th place in the latest provisional rankings.
“It’s an honour to be playing in the SAGA Insurance Masters, I’ve missed it for the last couple of years,” said Fu, who lost to Ding Junhui on his last appearance in the event in 2005.
“It’s such a prestigious tournament with a great history and everyone wants to do well in it. There’s something special about playing at Wembley and the crowds there. To be up against a legend like Steve in his home town is an extra incentive for me.”

Super... Besten Dank Snookerer... Worldsnooker: MALTA CUP
06 Dec 2007 14:36:00
World Snooker received an entry form for the Malta Cup from Ronnie O'Sullivan's management company, 110sport, which was accepted in good faith (read on below).
However, there was a misunderstanding between Ronnie and his management and it transpired that Ronnie did not wish to enter the event. Therefore Ronnie O’Sullivan will not appear in the tournament and the next player on the ranking list will be selected as his replacement

der hammer ist raus:
HIGGINS LAUNCHES 'WORLD SERIES'
In what could potentially transpire to be one of the best things to happen to snooker in recent years, world champion John Higgins and his manager, Pat Mooney, are to launch a 'World Series' of events around Europe next year.
Four tournaments are planned between May and August with Higgins hoping the mini-tour will grow in future years.
Eurosport's blanket coverage of major events has done for snooker in Europe what the BBC did for it in the 1970s and 80s.
Warsaw, Moscow, Jersey and either Germany or Holland have been chosen as the stopping off points for the first four tournaments.
"I've been looking forward to doing something like this for a long time," revealed Higgins.
"The idea is to get some small invitational events going - and with time they will grow and grow. The future of snooker is in Europe.
"I've always wanted to give something back to snooker and, being the world champion, this is the ideal opportunity.
"My name carries a lot of weight in the game, so I want to do my best to promote the sport. I've been happy to sit in the background in the past, but with my business head on I know I've got to push myself more.
"This is a very exciting opportunity for snooker, myself and a lot of other players."
The tournaments, which will all be televised, will feature top players plus local hopefuls and will compliment rather than clash with the main World Snooker events.
This could be the start of a genuine expansion of the game across the continent. quelle: snookersceneblog
